Travel with your BlackBerry Bold or BlackBerry Tour smartphone
To use your phone abroad, you'll need to have the SIM card that came with your phone installed and activated. If you haven't already done this, just call us at 800-411-0848 and a customer service representative will help you get set up. You should do this at least one week before you travel abroad.
Please note: Once your SIM card is activated, it will be synced with the phone number assigned to your phone. Your SIM card can't be used with any other phone number or phone.

Travel with any other CREDO phone
You can use your phone while traveling abroad in countries that use CDMA networks. While abroad, your phone will need to be set to automatic roaming.
Want to check email or access the web on your phone during your trip? If you haven't used data services on your phone before, you should make sure your data connection works before you leave on your trip. Keep in mind, data roaming charges can get very expensive.
Please note: Data coverage abroad may be limited.

Minimize roaming charges
Tips for any phone
Data charges while abroad can really add up. If you have a smartphone, you should turn off data services when not needed to avoid unexpected charges for things like push notifications and other updates that use data in the background.
If your phone is Wi-Fi enabled, you can keep your roaming charges to a minimum by using Wi-Fi whenever possible for things like checking email, surfing the web and uploading photos. When you use Wi-Fi, it doesn't count as data usage and data roaming charges won't apply. You should turn off your data services first in case you lose your Wi-Fi connection and end up roaming without knowing.
No Wi-Fi? Here are a few tips to keep your costs down:
Avoid sending or uploading photos
Sending emails or MMS messages with photo attachments and uploading photos to sites like Facebook and Flickr from your phone uses a lot of data and can get very expensive when you're abroad.
Avoid viewing videos or listening to the radio
Streaming multimedia applications like YouTube and Pandora use a large amount of data.
Download before you go
Want new games and music for your trip? We recommend downloading everything before you leave the country to avoid expensive data roaming charges.
Be selective in your internet use
Map apps use a great deal of data. It's best to bring a printed map or GPS device with you if you can. And while it may be fun to update your Facebook and Twitter feeds with travel tales, keep in mind that a little web browsing can end up costing you a lot.
How much data does my phone use?
Here are a few examples and estimated costs.
| Data use |
Estimated cost while roaming abroad |
| Emailing or uploading one 800KB photo taken with your BlackBerry® smartphone |
$16 |
| Viewing 20 mobile web pages (30KB average size) |
$12 |
| Sending and receiving 50 emails (3KB average size) |
$3 |
| Searching for a cafe and getting directions via Google Maps (400KB used) |
$8 |
Tips for your BlackBerry Bold or Tour smartphone
You can reduce roaming charges by turning off data when you don't need it. If you have a BlackBerry Enterprise Solution plan, you can also change your preferences to stop or minimize email delivery on your phone.
Turn off data services
You can use this option whenever you don't need data services (such as web access, email, and text messaging). You'll only be able to make and receive calls unless you connect to Wi-Fi.
- Go to the Manage Connections icon.
- If you have a BlackBerry Bold 9930, select Networks and Connections then Mobile Network. If you have a BlackBerry Bold 9650 or BlackBerry Tour, select Mobile Network Options.
- Under Data Services, change On to Off on the While Roaming dropdown.
When you need to use data again, just switch that back to On.
