Import contacts from a BlackBerry smartphone

To transfer contacts from a BlackBerry® smartphone to your new Android phone, you’ll need to export them into Gmail™ by using BlackBerry Desktop Software and Microsoft® Outlook® 2010. You’ll also need to have a Gmail account set up on your HTC One in order to sync your contacts.

If you don’t have a Gmail account, you can sign up for one at or directly from the Gmail app on your phone. Need help setting up Gmail on your phone? Just follow our easy instructions before you start the transfer process below.

While there are a number of steps to follow, the process shouldn’t take very long.

Please note: If you don’t have Blackberry Desktop Software on your computer, you can download it for free from the BlackBerry website. We highly recommend that you back up your BlackBerry before you begin. If you don’t know how to do this, please follow these instructions on the BlackBerry website.

On your computer:

  1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software, and then connect your BlackBerry smartphone with a micro-USB cable.
  2. If this is your first time using BlackBerry Desktop Software, you’ll get a message that you’ve connected a new device. Click Cancel.
  3. Click Organizer on the left side of the screen.
  4. Check the Contacts box. You should get a pop-up to configure your contacts. Under Account Settings, set the Contacts account drop-down box to Microsoft Outlook and then click OK. (Please note that you can also change the synchronization to be a one-way sync to your computer only or a two-way sync that will add contacts in Outlook to your BlackBerry as well. You’ll only need the one-way sync for this process.)
  5. Click Sync Organizer in the bottom right corner of the BlackBerry Desktop Software window.
  6. You’ll get a pop-up with the changes that will be made. Review the information and then click Sync.
  7. Close the Synchronization Summary.
  8. Open Outlook on your computer. Your BlackBerry contacts should now appear in your Microsoft Outlook contacts.
  9. Click File > Open > Import. The import and export wizard will open.
  10. Select Export to a file, then click Next.
  11. Select Comma Separated Values (Windows), then click Next.
  12. Select Contacts, then click Next.
  13. Type a name for the file, browse to a location where you’d like to save the file, then click Next. (If you don’t choose a new location, this file will be saved to your Documents folder by default.)
  14. Click Finish and wait for the export to complete.
  15. Go to If you’re not already logged in with the Gmail account that’s on your new phone, do so now. You’ll be taken to your Contacts page.
  16. Click More (above your contacts), then Import...
  17. Browse to where you saved the CSV file that you exported from Outlook and select the file with your contacts.
  18. Click Import.

On your HTC One:

  1. Drag the notification panel down from the top of your screen and tap gear icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Accounts & sync > Google.
  3. Select the Gmail account you used to import your contacts on your computer.
  4. If Contacts isn’t checked, tap it to check it. The sync should begin on its own.
If Contacts was already checked, tap menu icon > Sync now.
  5. Once the sync completes, your contacts should be on the phone.
