Mobile Hotspot

If you signed up for the Mobile Hotspot add-on plan, you can share your phone's internet connection with other Wi-Fi devices—like your laptop or tablet—whenever you turn on the hotspot feature.

Please note: To use the hotspot feature, you must have BlackBerry® 7.1 OS or higher on your phone. To see what version of software you have, double-press the Menu key () from the home screen to open the All panel if it's closed. Select Options > Device > About Device Versions. You'll see the software version just below the phone name. If you don't have version 7.1 or higher of the software, please see our section on software updates.

To turn on the hotspot feature and connect devices:

  1. From the home screen, swipe up the navigation bar or double-press the Menu key () to open the All panel if it's closed.
  2. Scroll down and select Manage Connections ().
  3. Check the Mobile Hotspot check box to turn it on.
  4. Create a passphrase for your hotspot and select OK.
  5. Read the message about mobile hotspot, check the box to avoid seeing the message in the future if desired and select OK.
  6. If you'd like to change the settings for your hotspot, including the network name, security settings and automatic shutoff time, scroll down and select Networks and Connections > Mobile Hotspot Connections > Options. Make any desired changes and press the End/Power key () to save them.
  7. Turn on the Wi-Fi feature on the device you want to connect. If you're not sure how to do this, please see the user guide for the device.
  8. Scan for Wi-Fi networks from the device and select your phone's hotspot.
  9. Enter your password to connect.

Your phone defaults to automatically shut off the hotspot after 15 minutes. You can change this setting in the Options section noted in step 6 above.

Please note:

  • When the hotspot feature is on, all data use on your phone and connected devices will be charged as mobile hotspot usage, at mobile hotspot rates. To avoid being charged for regular data use at hotspot rates, including possible overage charges, please make sure to turn off the mobile hotspot feature when you're not using it.
  • Having the hotspot feature on drains your phone's battery much more quickly than other features. It's best to plug in your phone while using it as a hotspot if possible.
  • Mobile hotspot does not work while roaming.
