MOBILIZING THE YOUTH VOTE ON SUPER TUESDAY
what:
CREDO Mobile, Student PIRGs and the ONE Campaign to use text messaging through mobile phones to increase turnout in Tuesday’s primary election contests.
SAN FRANCISCO – CREDO Mobile, the San Francisco-based mobile phone service from Working Assets, is employing an innovative way to get out the youth vote this Tuesday: their cellphones.
The phone company, along with the Student PIRGs and the ONE Campaign, will be sending out non-partisan voting reminders to 20,000 of their members and supporters.
Already, turnout by young voters has reached unprecedented levels in early primary contests. While registrations are up, the need to ensure that young voters follow through and vote is more important than ever.
On the eve of the election, CREDO Mobile will send an alert out to mobile phone users, reminding them to vote.
"This election cycle we're seeing the unprecedented power of the youth vote," said Michael Kieschnick, President of CREDO Mobile. "We can harness that energy if we reach them in a relevant way -- and that's the mobile phone."
Previous research conducted by CREDO Mobile and the Student PIRGs during the 2006 midterm elections showed an impressive 4 percentage point increase in voter turnout among those who received a text message reminder and those who didn’t.
