Medicare and Medicaid have been among the most successful government programs ever, providing much-needed medical care for millions of low-income people and senior citizens But 2011 saw outright attempts to cuts benefits and even do away with Medicare. The assault started with Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget bill which sought to privatize Medicare. And with the manufactured debt ceiling “crisis,” which resulted in the “super committee” tasked with reducing deficits, cuts were slated for Medicare and Medicaid benefits. CREDO members fought hard throughout the year to prevent cuts in benefits—cuts that were supported by all Republicans and some Democrats. More than 1.3 million CREDO Action petition signatures were delivered—and 27,891 phone calls made—in the fight to defend Medicare and Medicaid from benefit cuts. The cuts survived the axe, but the fight to protect these crucial programs continues.
